Book Orders – Humor!
I am sending home new book order catalogs today. Orders are due by MONDAY, MARCH 8TH. In addition to the usual Click and Arrow catalogs, I have added a HUMOR catalog. We have been working on recognizing and analyzing an author’s use of humor lately. (The graded HOT – higher order thinking – responses that I sent home yesterday about the Stormalong story were essays interpreting the author’s use of humor.) This can be a great way for you to reinforce the skills we are working on in school. You can user the HOT questions toward the bottom of the reading skill resources page.
To order online, visit this webpage.

Animal Research Assignment
This is a multi-week assignment, so you will have plenty of time!
When you chose your animal on the eNature website, you aught to have saved the Microsoft Word document that you typed your information in. Look at the questions on the second page. Go back top the eNature website and look up some information about your animal. Use that information to answer the questions on the second page of the Word document. Remember, make sure that you understand the information that you are planning to use to answer the questions. You do NOT need to use any other sources besides eNature; We will do more research in school.
Print out page 2 and bring it to school on THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25th. If you have trouble with this assignment, please see me IN ADVANCE (rather than waiting until the last minute!) If you need the Microsoft Word document again, you can download it here.

- Open the Planning Worksheet in Microsoft Word and enter your name, teacher, and room number.
- Then, follow the directions on the page and choose your animal to research AFTER looking through several choices on the eNature website.
- Make good choices! Don’t just pick an animal without looking on the website. In order to make an INFORMED decision, you need to look at several choices!
- Save the document on your home computer, because you will need to continue working on it another time!
- Print out the first page and bring it to school.

Timeliness
Over the past few weeks, I have seen a big increase in student difficulty with timeliness – both in their timely completion of homework and in their timely arrival at school. Please help your child to make sure that he or she is completing his or her homework every night and that the completed assignments make their way into school in the morning. Click here for a reminder of the Gr. 4 policy on homework completion. Homework should ALWAYS be recorded in the student’s homework planner. If he or she has lost his or her planner, please consider buying him or her a new agenda from an office store so that he or she doesn’t need to write assignments on random sheets of paper.
It’s also VERY important that your child arrives to school ON TIME each morning. School starts promptly at 8:50 AM, and students who arrive late are marked tardy. Remember, our morning work is intended to be a review of recently learned material, or a preparation for new learning. So when your child arrives to school late, he or she is missing important learning opportunities.

Last U.S. vet of WWI turns 109!
What a nice article! It’s so important that we continue to learn the stories that our aging veterans have to share with us!
Washington (CNN) — The last surviving U.S. veteran of World War I, former Cpl. Frank Buckles, turns 109 on Monday and is still hoping for a national memorial in Washington for his comrades.
Buckles is expected to deliver remarks during a quiet celebration Monday afternoon at his home in Charles Town, West Virginia.

Division, Science, more!
- We have started working on LONG DIVISION! Some kids met this new challenge with excitement, others with dread. (I fell into the “dread” category when I was in fourth grade.) I reminded the kids that we will be working on these skills for quite some time, so there’s no expectation that they master the concepts on the first day. I hope you can reinforce this attitude at home.
- Long division can be a challenge for kids, so we have a mnemonic to help them memorize the steps: Does McDonald’s sell cheese burgers? The first letter of each word represents a step: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Check (to make sure that the difference cannot itself be divided by the divisor, Bring down the numbers on the right, ? (Ask yourself if your answer makes sense.) I know this is confusing when you read it – I will try to come up with an easier way of explaining the process to you.
- We are in our second science unit of the year. Miss Colbert gave the kids a homework assignment that is due on Thursday!
- Remember, the winter concert is THIS THURSDAY NIGHT!

Student News 3 – Town Meeting
PGS Celebrates Martin Luther King Day
By R.G.
Two weeks ago, our school had a town meeting. In our town meeting, some of our grades performed some songs. All of their songs were about Martin Luther King Jr. Plus, in our meeting, Mrs. Gransky (our assistant principal) announced the winners of the reading rally, who got to the Uconn pep rally. We had M.K. from our class who won and this is how she felt: “I felt proud.” C.F.`s little sister, P.F., won also. This is how C.F. felt when he heard his little sister won: “I felt very happy for her and I hope she has fun at the pep rally too!”
